The Hunt is on...
A captain intent on sailing the Sea of Stars. He is older, but still spry, his hair a wild black tangle. Part of his skin has been turned to wood, the result of a time when he sought to take advantage of a young dryad. This dryad was in fact an exiled Vassiri, who are often mistaken for dryads, for that is the form they take when their gathered souls have been sucked from them as punishment. They must bind themselves to a living thing sturdy enough to withstand their life draining powers in order to survive. The sentient trees of her grove came to her defense, grasping at Zeliard, and attempting to turn the man into a dryad himself.
In his rage, he returned to his camp, retrieved his axe, and returned to the dryad’s grove, hacking down every tree in his path. He then felled the dryad’s own tree, using it as the mainmast for his ship, Dryad’s Regret. The dryad, Dithayara, is still trapped within the tree — she claims herself as one of the Vassiri, threatening to steal Zeliard’s soul when she is free. The captain merely laughs at this. He plans to use her magic to lead him across the Sea of Stars.
Captain Zeliard regrets what he had to do, but he feels the dryad left him no choice — such resistance to his manhood could not go unpunished. He could never desire her like that now, after such an insult to him, but instead keeps her like a pitiful ward within the mainmast of his ship, acting the martyr as if he were doing a favor for an old friend.
